Family Fishing Fun

Half Day Family Fishing in Clearwater Waters

The summer heat has officially settled into Pinellas County this July, but the fishing off the Florida Gulf Coast remains incredibly productive. With the warmer water temperatures, our strategy on recent Clearwater fishing charters has been to get off the dock early, capitalize on the morning bite, and take advantage of the moving tides.

Inshore Fishing: Snook and Redfish
Right now, the inshore fishing in Clearwater is highly focused on snook. We are finding solid numbers of them stacked up around the passes and cruising the troughs right off the beaches. Live pilchards have been the absolute bait of choice. We are seeing some quality fish being brought to the Yellowfin, especially during the first few hours of our morning half-day trips.

Redfish are also cooperating nicely, holding tight to the mangrove shorelines during the incoming higher tides. Pitching live bait precisely under the overhangs has produced consistent, heavy-hitting hookups for our guests.

Nearshore Reefs: Snapper and Sharks
For our anglers heading a bit further out on our 6-hour trips, the nearshore reefs are yielding excellent numbers of mangrove snapper. They are providing constant rod-bending activity, which is perfect for keeping everyone engaged on our family fishing trips. We are dropping down light tackle with live bait and getting immediate results.

We have also run into some large seasonal sharks patrolling the nearshore waters. If you are looking to test your strength on some heavier tackle, targeting these summer sharks provides a serious fight.

Captain’s Advice for Summer Fishing
My biggest piece of advice for booking a summer fishing charter near Clearwater Beach is to opt for our 7:30 AM start time. Beating the mid-day heat keeps both the anglers and the fish much more comfortable, and the bite is almost always better before the sun is sitting high overhead. Also, make sure to bring your polarized sunglasses—they are essential for spotting fish moving across the flats from the sight-fishing tower.

The local fishery is healthy, the bait is plentiful, and as always, the tug is the drug. If you are looking to get on the water and experience what the Gulf Coast has to offer this season, check our availability and give us a call to secure your date.

A Recap of Successful Fishing In Islamorada

Gag Grouper

King Mackerel

We've got plenty of bait - good-sized shrimp at the marina and catchable pilchards around Islamorada. This time of year, getting bait is easy, making half the battle for a good fishing day already won.

Our team fished the ocean side patches on the Atlantic side, small bits of coral reef in shallow waters from 10 to 30 feet. They caught a mix of fish like snappers (mangroves, and muttons), groupers, hogfish, and mackerel. The pilchards worked well for snappers and groupers, while hogfish preferred shrimp. Note that we can't keep hogfish this time of year.

In a nutshell, with lots of bait options and a focus on ocean side patches, our anglers had a successful day, showing how different bait can attract different fish. The availability of bait continues to be a big plus for our fishing adventures.

Fishing day

Guests had an absolute blast as they skillfully reeled in a diverse array of fish during their excursion. With plenty of laughter and thrilling battles, the experience was truly memorable. Join us in the stunning surroundings of Islamorada for your own unforgettable day out on the water.

Picture Perfect Catches: Islamorada Fishing Moments

Growing up in Tarpon Springs as part of a family deeply embedded in professional scuba diving and fishing, I spent my entire life on these waters. My early years were defined by the rhythm of the tides and the secrets of our local mangroves, laying the foundation for what would become my lifelong passion. After gaining years of professional guiding experience throughout the Florida Keys and refining my skills across the Tampa Bay area, I felt a strong pull to return home. I started 4th Generation Fishing Charters to share the incredible fishery we have right here on the Florida Gulf Coast, and for me, there is no greater satisfaction than seeing a guest’s eyes light up when they feel that first hard strike—truly, the tug is the drug. My family’s legacy is woven into the local maritime community through our long-standing business, Mac’s Sports Scuba in Tarpon Springs and Clearwater. Having been surrounded by experts in both diving and boating for my entire life, I developed a deep respect for the ocean’s ecosystem and the responsibilities that come with being a professional guide. This background allows me to navigate Pinellas, Pasco, and the greater Tampa Bay area with an intuitive understanding of where the fish are holding and why. My goal is always to provide a safe, educational, and authentic look at our local waters, ensuring that every time we leave the dock, you are in the hands of someone who treats these waters with the care they deserve. Beyond the technical side of angling, my philosophy is simple: every trip should be about more than just the final catch. I am dedicated to teaching proper techniques, sharing the history of our beautiful coastline, and ensuring that every person on board feels confident and welcome. Whether you are a seasoned angler looking to master a new skill or a family seeking an introduction to saltwater fishing, I tailor my approach to meet your specific needs. It is a privilege to spend my days on the water, and I am genuinely invested in making sure your time spent with me is both productive and deeply memorable.
Your Vessel: The 2020 Yellowfin 24 CE
The platform for our excursions is a 2020 Yellowfin 24 CE, a vessel meticulously chosen for its legendary performance and versatility in our local Gulf waters. This boat is widely recognized for offering one of the smoothest, driest rides in its class, which is essential for navigating everything from the open bay to the nearshore reefs with ease. It features a shallow draft that allows us to access those hidden, highly productive hotspots where larger boats simply cannot go, giving us a distinct advantage when hunting for trophy-sized snook or redfish. Outfitted with premium electronics and maintained to the highest standards, the boat serves as a stable, comfortable, and reliable base for every fishing adventure we undertake.
